Trying to catch up... PDF Print E-mail

I finally took the time to start making a list of everything I'm committed to...not just things I promised people, but also stuff I have stored that I plan someday to get around to. Looking at these things like a commitment rather than just an item on a shelf helps to justify making a decision sooner on it - am I really ever going to get around to it, or should I just dump it? Preferably...the answer will be dump it.

I have some goals in mind...a plan if you can believe it...and it seems the large amount of stuff I've accumulated over the past several years is directly in the way of achieving those goals. They're a burden rather than a blessing. Its time to do something about that!

Unfortunately all this work and effort are taking a toll on my summer...not much in the way of swimming, amusement parks, or the shore for me this year, but in the long run, it'll be WELL worth it, and I'm sure sooner or later I'll catch up on some fun before the fall kicks in.

Rebooting Iphone - What to do!? Here's what! PDF Print E-mail

Long story short, something happened to my Iphone 3gs and its stuck in the reboot cycle like many other people have run into. In my case however, I haven't done a backup in quite some time (I rarely ever hook the phone up to the computer) and I think the previous backup was lost on a system re-image.

In my case, the phone comes on to the Apple logo - sits there for maybe 10 minutes...then vibrates and suddenly starts reponding via USB (Itunes detects it, etc). Unfortunately that only lasts 2-5 minutes before it reboots again and starts all over. In addition, the Iphone does NOT show up in Explorer, so I can't access the photos like I normally can. Beings that my phone has GOBS of music and photos on it - how do you get off the important stuff? Here's how...

First off my phone wasn't synced with anything beyond my calendar, so to get contacts and notes off of it, I waited for the phone to show up in iTunes, clicked the Info tab at the top and told it to sync the contacts and notes with Outlook. (Since my Outlook is for work, I temporarily moved my work contacts and notes to different folders so they wouldn't get lost or mixed with my personal phone stuff).

Thankfully that worked and I got my address book and notes. WHEW!

Next: Photos and Videos (I don't care about music). This is a toughy since I have 4 gigs of photos and with only a 2-5 minute window it doesn't allow itunes to do a full backup or even Sync photos, so a third-party solution is needed here. I found an app called "PhoneDisk" which allowed me to access the Iphone via explorer even in its handicapped state. Using this, I can slowly by surely grab what I can out of the DCIM folder before I restore the phone. I mostly wanted the vids since many are home family movies...most of the pics are crap and can go. The software currently costs $20 for a single user or $30 for a 5-user license (family pack). The nice thing is being a hardware geek, this lets you browse the phone's actual file system, so not only does it access the Photos, Music, etc but any actual raw files and your app data as well. It'll be cool to mess with once my phone is back up and running again.

Last but not least, I want to mention something else. Doing a backup of your phone in iTunes is obviously reccommended, but I want to point out that in those backup files that it transfers, a LOT of personal data gets transferred as well, including a lot of what you typed in your phone, possibly going back YEARS. Its very important to not only choose the "Encrypt Iphone Backup" checkbox before doing your backups, but make sure if you get a new computer that you wipe out itunes and those backup folders! They are located here on XP machines:

c:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup

So the moral of the story is...BACK UP YOUR PHONE AND ENCRYPT THE BACKUPS!

Sold my Grand Prix.... PDF Print E-mail

Dear Grand Prix, over the past 10 years and 2 months, you've been a great car to me. You were my first loan and first major purchase. You've gotten me and my friends anywhere and everywhere we've needed to go, during the good times and the bad, and usually we got there before everybody else :-) You've provided many many great memories over the course of 173,000 miles. I'm glad I was able to keep you from an early grave and I hope you continue to provide for your next owners, and live out your retirement years with pride. Thank you.

Change is good, right? PDF Print E-mail

Wow...the last few months have been absolutely nuts for me. Sold off a bunch of stuff including one of my cars, got my own place, did some traveling for work, and now the next step is to tackle the last several years of hoarding this and that and get it down to what I can properly store and use. Not nearly as easy as it sounds!! Stay tuned for more updates eventually, when I find the time!!

Yeah its February, time for an update! PDF Print E-mail

Well long story short, there hasn't been much of any updates on my part because I've been focusing on life and non-hobby-related issues lately. That said, I do have some news...

Arcade: Sea Wolf joins the Madman Arcade! I recently picked up a Midway Sea Wolf game (a project) last Friday. Mostly complete but needs a few parts - we'll see how this goes. Right off the bat, the edge connector was lopped off, the bezel and monitor gel is missing, and the periscope needs almost everything kinda refurbed/tightened on it. The boardset is there so we'll see how easily it comes back to life.

I recently actually spent some time at the 'cade, just firing everything up and doing little repairs here and there. I'm hoping to spend some more time, at least one day a week catching up on it so I can start selling off some of my spare arcade crap that seems to be piling up everywhere.

Car Front: I started the GN. Thats about as far as it got.

Thats all for now, just sick of seeing the same old article and wanted to put something fresh up. Maybe another update in a few days.
