Well that was…easy! Yesterday I posted about my unusual Teletype ASR-33, and mentioned that I saw an unused connector stuffed into the UCC…
Well as it turned out, there was also about 12 inches of wire harness stuffed in there too!
The color of the wires somewhat matches what was mentioned in another Anderson Jacobson manual, and the pins in the plug line up to plug #2 on the back of the UCC, so I had no qualms about hooking it up there.
Unfortunately, one step forward and two steps back. Connecting the harness now has the TTY idling properly in line mode, but I can’t get the coupler to do anything yet either. I tried calling my other ASR-33 with its Bell 103c modem in it, but it didnt respond to the handshake at all. Rats. I also accidentally broke my paper tape reader switch on #1 in my experiments. (Insert much more colorful language).
Im not sure where to go next as far as getting the coupler working, other than trying to verify its power supply. I may also take a peek at the half/full duplex switch as that was modified for the rs-232 adapter, maybe theres some other disconnected wires in there.
On the plus side I tinkered with Asr-33 #1 a bit as well, and realize that the issues I was battling on it are somewhat related; pressing space prints a “a/m” character, and theres no carriage return. The keyboard definitely needs repair yet but going by the punched tape it appears to have the right codes, so perhaps the print suppression bar is stuck.
Baby steps…
