Franklin Institute Science After Hours “Flannel and Frost”

The last time I attended a Franklin Institute “Science After Hours” event was 2020; with a 1920s theme. From science facts about alcohol to a jazz band parading down the marble staircase with 100+ people in tow, it was certainly awesome. Little did we know that only a couple weeks after that event, things would get very different. Fast forward to last week, I finally got back for another science after hours: Flannel and Frost!

Starting with the Planetarium laser shows of the 90s/early 2000s, going to the Franklin Institute after hours gives me a weird vibe. I can’t really describe it, but something along the lines of being at a school-type building at night when you’re normally only there during the day or something. I can’t put my finger on a good description for it.

Anyways, I recently attended the latest “Science After Hours” event, dubbed “Flannel and Frost” at the Franklin Institute. These events include opening up the entire museum after hours, and include special exhibits, performances, events, and other neat things. Definitely something fun to check out. Enjoy some highlights below…

First stop – a typewriter exhibit showing typewriters from many eras by a (new to me) group called Philly Typewriter. Naturally had to mention my Teletype adventures.

IBM Electric Model 01 – one of the first successfully mass produced electric typewriters

Next was a visit to the roof as we thought the telescope was open, but it was just the roof patio with “a” Telescope available. Still cool for city photo-ops.

Philly at Night

The atrium that only featured a tree, a band, and other performers as well. Note that weird gap in the railing in the background; that was for the balance bike that used to ride along a cable stretched across the atrium. I got to try it (and survived) so I’ll have to dig up those pics at some point.

The old library rooms were set up to provide a landscape for a picture taking.

A trip to the Franklin Institute wouldn’t be complete without a run through the giant heart. After my recent experiences, it hit a little bit different this time.

Last but not least, I thought it was really neat that they had “campfire stories” set up in the Planetarium; people were “camped” on the floor of the planetarium around (virtual) fires and hearing interesting stories. I couldn’t get a pic as it was dark, but pretty cool.

If you ever have the opportunity to attend one of their science after hours events, I highly recommend doing so! Members get better pricing and a discount on the parking garage too.
