Whirlwind

Figured I’d put up a personal blog post, as I think one is due.

To say the last few weeks have been a whirlwind of emotions amongst other things, would certainly be an understatement. While things could have been worse, it’s just been a whirlwind of stuff going on, starting with a trip, continuing with a funeral, and other “life” things.

Firefox – Gmail/Google Sites lock up/fail to load

Figured I’d share this out so I can find it faster in the future if I need to switch PCs around. On the latest versions of Firefox, Google services seem to run into an issue where if you open things like Gmail, it’ll work for a while, then just…stop responding, but ONLY Googles sites stop responding.

Apparently it has to do with a setting in Firefox that’s handling a new TLS 1.3 feature (stuff thats a bit over my head), so I’ll simply share the article with the fix for it if anyone is running into this issue:

Can’t connect to Google since Firefox 100 | Firefox Support Forum | Mozilla Support

Long story short, go into Firefox config by browsing to about:config (click yes to the prompts), then search for security.tls.enable_0rtt_data, which will be set as TRUE. Set it to false using the ying-yang looking icon to the right, and then close/reopen Firefox. Gmail and other Google sites should now work as expected.

Office365: Draft Emails Created in Inbox

Aaand again…another CRAZY Office365 issue solved, with a resolution out of left field. In this case, the user was having problems when replying to emails; not only did the email get delivered as usual, and the usual sent item was created in Sents, but the original email in the INBOX was being converted to a DRAFT! So if I sent him an email, and he replied to me, I’d get the reply as usual, but my original email, in his inbox, was turning into a draft.

In addition, he complained that his calendar was out-of-sync; things on his phone weren’t showing up in Outlook.

Telephone Collectors Show 2022

A couple days ago I was rooting around in the garage for something, and came across a box of stuff I didn’t recognize at first. After digging in I realized it was my loot from the Telephone Collectors show! Stuff that I had to bring back and immediately stash due to a crazy week of plans that didn’t have any time for tinkering or nerdy stuff. I guess I didn’t need the stuff that bad 😉

Despite being wedged into a packed couple weeks in my early summer calendar, I managed to get over to the Lancaster area to attend the 2022 Telephone Collectors International (TCI) show, something they haven’t had since before the pandemic.

Franklin Institute – Flyer and Day Pass – April 1944

Continuing on with more Philadelphia ephemera; it constantly amazes me that I can still find this stuff from 70+ years ago. I recently came across this flyer and pass (ticket) for the Franklin Institute, dated April 1944. I actually had this back in Feb 2023, but decided it would be cool to wait until April 2023, to reflect the Franklin Institute a short 79 years ago.

Update on #mactanic

So, not sure if I actually ever posted it here, but around March of 2022, my nephew brought over a Mac Plus he found at a flea market. It only took a glance to see that this thing had…issues…considering the noticeable dirt/rust I could see in the floppy slot. Opening the thing revealed the real story – that this thing likely spent a decent amount of time in someone’s flooded basement, or perhaps even a pond somewhere. Literally! The internal steel frame was so rusted it was literally crumbling.

Other than the plastic case itself, the only salvagable part, oddly enough, was the motherboard. At least I thought so “for science”. Can a motherboard that spent serious time under water ever work again?

New Year – Same old $hit?

Figured I’d try to keep up with the blog posts – things are going OK here in 2023 (as good as they can anyway). I’ve gotten nothing but good news from follow up doc visits, so I can at least be thankful for that.

Towards the end of last year, I realize just how much different my take on the holidays are vs years ago. As an adult, the magic is just…gone. I just see it now as the busiest, craziest, most overloaded month of the year.
