OneDrive – “The Documents folder contains other important folders…”

Yet another dreaded hurdle trying to enable OneDrive “Backup” (previously labeled as KFM, or “Known Folder Move”). When trying to enable OneDrive backup, you get an error: “The Documents folder contains other important folders and isn’t supported for file protection.”

TIL: Windows 10 Display Order needs an overlapping edge

Another IT tidbit, and honestly kind of a boring but funny one. I was fiddling around with my desk setup, and have my laptop as one of my screens. Since the laptop sits on the desk and the other screens are sort of “above” it on a stand, I attempted to set Windows to mimic the real-life configuration of the monitors.

What I ran into though, was the fact that there are no overlapping edges between screen #1 and screen #2, so the mouse would not jump – at all – off of screen #1. I HAD to move it over so that there was at least a little overlap between the two, like this:

Just figured I’d share!

TIL: Route -f Breaks Sophos Endpoint

In IT there are certain things that you don’t often “dig into”, either for lack of time or just the fact that something “just works”. Other than setting up necessary routes and gateways, usually through DHCP, you often don’t bother with routing on a user’s workstation, but hopefully a lesson I learned recently will stop someone else from making the same mistake.

Adobe Acrobat “Could not verify subscription” – FIX

Another fun nightmare software repair – Adobe Acrobat DC. The problem was that the user would try to sign in, and it would eventually time out saying “could not verify subscription; you’re not connected to the internet”. As such, Adobe would just close, and user couldn’t use the Adobe PDF printer driver to print to PDF. If I tried to sign out, it would say “initializing”. In addition in some cases Adobe would crash out with “error 110”, which naturally is not even listed in the troubleshooting guide.

Microsoft Teams and the Missing Teams Meeting Outlook Addin

With the ongoing pandemic, the last thing we want is more software glitches to deal with. In my case, I had to set up a number of new systems for new users, and naturally on the last few, just happened to notice that in Outlook, the Teams addin didn’t seem to be loading.

Notably, I didn’t see the big purple “New Teams Meeting” button under the Calendar function in Outlook.

Windows 10 Update Notifications – Sorta Broken?

Ok, so funny update to my post yesterday regarding Windows 10 update notifications. End of the day today and me and a buddy were talking while closing down for the day, and as he’s talking, I see his Windows 10 computer suddenly prompt for updates OUT OF THE BLUE. I think he was taken by surprised when I pushed him aside and rushed over to see if that was really the case, and sure enough, his computer was prompting. Why it waited until 5:15 I’m not sure, but I’m thinking it could be due to the “Active Hours” setting.

UPDATE 3-4-2020: Confirmed, that setting seems to have brought update notifications back to life for the entire organization!

Windows 10 Update Notifications: Broken

On the business side of things, it seems that when Windows 10 checks in with a WSUS server (internal Windows update server), Windows 10 does not notify users when updates are available. I spent a solid day working on this, thinking that perhaps I did something in a group policy somewhere that caused it, but lo and behold, even taking a freshly imaged Windows 10 1903 computer, with only a (new) WSUS group policy still didn’t work properly.
